Profile
PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Douglas K. Smith graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, in 1969. He received his Doctor of Law Degree, with Distinction, from Cornell Law School in 1972. At Cornell Law School, he was a member of the Board of Editors of the Cornell Law Review and authored a sixty page Law Review Comment. He was elected to the Order of the Coif, a legal honorary society. After graduation, Mr. Smith was an associate of one of the largest law firms in the United States. Thereafter, during the Vietnam war, he entered the United States Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps, serving as a Captain for three years. After leaving the Army in 1976, Mr. Smith was an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Puget Sound School of Law (now Seattle University School of Law) and opened his own practice in Tacoma, Washington for the private practice of law. He is a member of the bar of Washington and has in the past been admitted to practice in both Ohio and the District of Columbia. He is admitted to practice before numerous federal courts, to include the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Smith’s law practice in Tacoma emphasized trial work for over twenty years. During that time, Mr. Smith earned the highest possible rating for legal ability and ethics (an AV rating) awarded by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, the most respected national source of authoritative information about lawyers in the United States. An AV rating is awarded to only about 20% of all attorneys in the country. Mr. Smith was nationally certified as a Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, one of only about a dozen attorneys in Washington to be so certified at the time. Mr. Smith served the public for over a decade as a Special Disciplinary Counsel for the Washington State Bar Association and in 1998 was appointed to serve for three years as a member of the State Bar Association’s Disciplinary Board. He often was selected by litigants as an arbitrator, has been appointed to the Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association and has served as a Judge Pro Tempore in both District Court and Superior Court.

After about a quarter of a century practicing law, Mr. Smith sought new challenges and entered the field of commercial real estate, initially as an agent with Coldwell Banker Commercial Hawkins-Poe in Tacoma, Washington, engaging in general commercial brokerage. Mr. Smith then joined the Seattle office of Marcus & Millichap, specializing in the sale of investment properties. At Marcus & Millichap, Mr. Smith received an award for outstanding sales achievement. Mr. Smith joined Colliers International in 2003. Mr. Smith specializes in the sale of multi-family and other investment properties and most of his transactions involve 1031 tax deferred exchanges. Mr. Smith has been one of the top producing agents in Puget Sound and in 2007 became an Associate Vice President of Colliers.

Mr. Smith holds an Associate Broker’s license. As a real estate agent, Mr. Smith has distinguished himself by being awarded the elite Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation, the most coveted and respected designation in commercial real estate. Only 6% of the nation’s 125,000 commercial real estate practitioners have been awarded the designation. To qualify for this national recognition, it is necessary to complete graduate level educational work, often described as the “Ph.D of commercial real estate,” to submit proof of extensive practical experience in the commercial investment field and to pass a comprehensive, day long examination.

Mr. Smith has been selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Business, Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders of America, Who’s Who in American Law, the National Registry of Who’s Who and other similar publications. He is a member of the National Association of Realtors, the Washington Association of Realtors, the Washington Commercial Brokers Association, the Washington Commercial Association of Realtors and the CCIM Institute. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Western Washington Chapter of CCIMs.

Mr. Smith is 61 years of age and has been married for forty years. His wife is a stockbroker. Mr. Smith served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Tacoma Little Theatre from 1997 until 2002 and was the President of the Board in 2000-2001. In the past, Mr. Smith has been a member of the Tacoma Advisory Council of Big Brothers Big Sisters of King and Pierce Counties. For eight years, Mr. Smith was a Big Brother, mentoring a young man from age eleven through adulthood.
