Highlights of the first quarter retail report include:
Toward the end of the 1st quarter there was a great deal of positive
news in BC, as many economic indicators that had been trending downward
during recent months started to level off, and in some instances, shift
upwards. BC retail sales are leading the country in growth, the residential
housing market seems to have leveled off and residential and commercial
building permits skirted the Canada-wide trend by increasing in the month
of January.
For the first time in several years, there were opportunities
for retailers looking to expand in Metro Vancouver. Well-located retail
space has come to the market and as a result, retailers with cash will
benefit by being in a position to take advantage of deals, while other
retailers burdened with debt are side-lined until financing becomes more
readily available.
The upcoming Winter Olympic Games are generating excitement that
will dramatically increase over the next 12 months. Vancouver is guaranteed
to have an influx of thousands of people and media attention from around
the world that is sure to benefit the local economy.
