The industrial sector showed strong growth reaching 7.1% at the end of the 3rd quarter in 2008. According to the Instituto Brasileiro de Geograa e Estatísticas (IBGE), the 4th quarter started feeling the effects of the international crisis and the industrial production declined by 5.2% in November, compared to October 2008.
The main drivers in this decline were the auto and auto parts industries with decreases of 22.6%. These sectors are expected to be affected the most and will need incentives from the government in 2009. The other sectors in the industry have not been impacted greatly yet, although a sense of caution for new investments and expansions remains.
Due to high demand and low supply of industrial properties, the crisis has had no effect thus far on asking rates. Up until the end of the 3rd quarter in 2008, the amount of time companies had to make decisions in regards to leases and/or sales was reduced.
