Overall vacancy for the Greater Edmonton region unexpectedly
decreased from 3.17% in the last quarter of 2008 to 2.99% for the first
quarter of 2009. This can mostly be attributed to the lack of new
construction being added to the inventory during the quarter. After
several years of steadily increasing the inventory by more than one million
square feet per year, the first quarter of 2009 recorded zero new construction
and by year’s end less than one million square feet is expected to be
added to the industrial inventory.
